Nagle Resources Reserve

Set in the valley of Thousand Hills below 'table mountain', 20km north of Cato Ridge.

Apart from day visitor facilities and a warm water fish hatchery, can be found an 18 bed conference venue and a six bed game lodge unsurpassed for its tranquillity. Meals are prepared by a local chef and the bush lodge atmosphere is enhanced by regular visits of impala, zebra and an abundance of birds. Game/Bush Lodge-meals prepared by the local chef

New Germany Nature Reserve

New Germany-Westville.
From the N3 take the off-ramp to enter St Johns Road. Cross the bridge over the freeway then take the first turn to the right into old main road. Turn left into Eskom Road, then right into Mountain Ridge Road and left into Gilbert Drive, which leads into the reserve.

A well-preserved area comprising remnant coastal bush, grassland and protea communities. Red, common and blue duiker, vervet monkeys, bushbuck, banded mongoose and porcupine occur. Reintroduced species include nyala, reedbuck, impala, steenbok and zebra. There are four trails, picnic and braai sites and an interpretation centre.

North Park Nature Reserve

Northdene, Municipality of Queensburgh.
From Durban take the N3 towards Pietermaritzburg. Take the N2 south exit, then the Edwin Swales-Queensburgh exit. Turn right at the traffic lights and travel towards Queensburgh on the M7 for 7,3km. Take the north park exit. Follow the M5 south (main road) under the railway bridge and up the hill. At the rhino sign, turn right into Anderson Road.

This small reserve of coastal lowland forest is adjacent to the Umhlatuzana river. Bushbuck, blue and grey duiker, banded mongoose, as well as abundant birdlife, may be seen. Paths have been laid out. Old settling ponds provide a haven for many waterbirds.

Palmiet Nature Reserve

From Durban on the M13, take the Rockdale-Jan Hofmeyr Road turn-off, go left over the bridge, continuing along Jan Hofmeyr Road for about 1,5 km. Just before the Westville hotel turn into David Mcclean drive on the right. The reserve entrance is at the bottom of this road on the right.

The reserve covers a wide range of vegetation from riverine forest along the Palmiet River to grassland on the upper slopes. There is abundant birdlife including the Longtailed Wagtail, which can often be seen. There are four well signposted trails, the trail along the river to the cascade being particularly beautiful.

Paradise Valley Nature Reserve

From Durban on the N3 take the turn-off to Sarnia. Turn left immediately, and then follow this road to its end. Eden road, Pinetown.

Coastal forest, which is home to a wide variety of birdlife. Reptiles and several antelope species occur. The paradise valley waterfall is one of the most beautiful spots in the Durban district. There are several good walks, one of which runs alongside the river to the waterfall. Picnic sites, public toilets, braai, car park, visitors centre. Durban's original water supply works were situated above the waterfall. Open 7 am to 5 pm daily and an admission is payable at the reserve office.

Phezulu Safari Park

5 Old Main Road. Botha's hill area.
From the central traffic lights in Hillcrest travel about 4km towards Botha's Hill, turning left just before Heidi's Farm Stall into Lello road. Continue a further 11 km to a culvert over the Mhlatuzana River. The reserve extends on both sides of the road to Clement Stott Road.

A replica of a typical Zulu village with beehive shaped huts. Here a visitor can gain insight into the lifestyle of the Zulu's and see their living quarters and utensils. A typical Zulu dance is performed at the arena for visitors. A traditional lunch is also available. Many water-loving indigenous trees and shrubs are to be seen. There are no paths. Hours: 9:00am - 4:00pm daily. Show times: 10:00 - 11:30am, 1:30 - 3:30pm. Self catering and camp site
