Springside Nature Reserve

Hillcrest , about 30 km north-west of Durban. From the N3 turn off to Hillcrest and follow the Old Main Road into Hillcrest. Turn right at the second traffic light, pass under the railway bridge, then right into Springside Road to the reserve entrance on the left.

The reserve is on both sides of a small stream which is slow-moving and swampy in places. There is a pleasant walk on each side of the stream, as well as small sections of forest. There are toilet facilities, a resource centre and a small kitchen. A brochure is available from the Hillcrest administrative entity. Kingfisher resource centre available for small conferences/meetings.

Treasure Beach Environmental Education Centre

Durban Bluff. From Durban, on the southern freeway, take the Jacobs exit and turn left into Quality Street. Continue straight across Tara Road into Highbury Road. Approximately 150 m further on turn right into Nerissa Road. at the crest of the hill, turn left into Marine Drive, then first right and continue for about 70 m to the centre on the right.

This area encompasses the following : a unique climax grassland, the rocky shore, the coastal forest and a wetland area. Although the education centre building is not open to the public, visitors may wander in the grassland at will.

Umhlanga Bush Nature Reserve

Northern side of the Umhlanga Lagoon. A beautiful reserve of dune forest. Bushbuck, red and blue duiker, banded mongoose, vervet monkey and Crested Guinea Fowl are to be found. There is a wide variety of birdlife. A morning walk is conducted by the Wildlife Society approximately every two months.

Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve

From Durban take the M4, heading North along Stanger Street. After the first exit to Umhlanga, take the Portland Drive exit. At the stop sign, turn right into Portland drive, under the M4. Take the first left turn into Newlands Drive, to a yield sign. Turn left again, Past Breakers Holiday Flats, to the entrance of the reserve on the right.

Two trails are in the reserve. A wide variety of birds, small of mammals, monkeys and very old trees.

Umhlanga Ponds

North of Durban.
This is a sewage purification works. There are four ponds which attract a great variety of birds, including the fish eagle and egyptian goose. There are two hides.

Virginia Bush Nature Reserve

Durban North. Follow NMR Avenue north from the city centre until it becomes Northway. Follow Northway to a traffic circle, then turn right into broadway. Take the second turn left into Kensington Drive and continue across Margaret Mayton Avenue to the reserve which is situated to the left.

This small piece of bush originally formed part of the natural coastal bush which linked up with the dune bush nearer the coastline. The main attraction is birdlife and a pond has been built to attract frogs and waterbirds. There is a guided walk each month.
