Pigeon Valley Park

Durban, Glenwood. From the city centre take Smith Street into Berea Road. Turn left into Manning Road and continue for about 2 km to Rhodes Avenue. Turn right to the entrance gate on the left.

The park is an example of the extensive bush which, once covered the Berea. It is a beautiful little gem set right in the suburbs of Durban. There are some magnificent old trees and the bird and plant life is prolific. The largest known colony of the rare Natal elm is located here.

Rockdale Park

Westville, along Spine Road
The park comprises of a small patch of indigenous bush and is home to many of the local birds. There is a pleasant walk alongside the stream leading up to Cliff Road. Guided trails occur.

Roosfontein Nature Reserve

From Durban take the Westville off-ramp from the N3, then turn left and continue past Westville Hospital. The reserve entrance is on the left.

A newly opened reserve with small mammals such as grey duiker, vervet monkey, banded mongoose, etc. There are two walks. There is a picnic area along the river edge.

Seaton Park

Durban North. Take NMR Avenue travelling north out of Durban until it becomes Northway. Follow Northway to the bridge and after crossing it, turn immediately left into Lonsdale Road to a t-junction. Turn left, then immediately right into Lothian Road. The park is on the right.

The park is a remnant of coastal forest and there are many trees which thrive here in the favourable climate provided by shelter from the forest canopy and adjacent wooded areas. Birdlife is abundant and the forest supports the African Goshawk. The forest provides an interesting exploration for nature lovers and ample opportunity for peaceful and relaxing walks.

Shongweni Resource Reserve

Shongweni Dam, 30 km from Durban. Take the N3 from Durban, past the toll plaza at Mariannhill. Take the Shongweni-Assagay off-ramp, turn left towards Shongweni then left again at the sign to the dam. Take the first turn to the right along a gravel road for about 4 km to the Shongweni dam reserve. An approach can be made from Pinetown on the R613, and from the north, via Assagay and Bothas Hill.

Offers a nature trail, game drives and horse riding. Wide variety of game and noted as one of the top bird sanctuaries. The reserve is 1700 hectares in size and offers fine examples of many habitats including grasslands, valley, bushveld and spectacular cliffs. The dam was built in 1927. For the day visitor there are three picnic sites available as well as a self guided nature trail. Fishing and sailing is also permitted. Accommodation available at Mkangoma camp: self-catering

Silverglen Nature Reserve

Durban, between Chatsworth and Umlazi. From the Eb Cloete Interchange follow the N2 south to the Chatsworth-Mobeni exit. At the traffic lights at the end of the off-ramp turn right into Higginson Highway and continue for 2 km before turning left into Havenside Drive. Turn left into Silverglen Drive, travel for 3,7km then left again into Lakeview Road. Follow this road to the reserve gates.

This is a combination of grassland, forest and riverine areas, it has one of the best preserved grasslands in Durban. There is a nursery for growing medicinal plants. There is also a resource centre, picnic sites, and braai facilities. Fishing , yachting and boardsailing are allowed on the reservoir.
