Structure
Foley-Marianni Bridge, Umgeni RiverFoley and Marianni were two young canoeists who negotiated
the Umgeni and Umsinduzi
Rivers in 1893, travelling from Pietermaritzburg to Durban
in
seven days. Indigo VatsMr Colenbrander and Mr Preen built the indigo vats in
1854, but the venture failed. The
ruins were rediscovered in 1969 and declared a national
monument in 1974. They are on
the Natal blood transfusion services property. Madressa ArcadeIt was built in 1927. The arcade is lined with fifty or so
busy little shops that are
reminiscent of a colourful oriental bazaar. Malandela Highway, KwaMashuThe Malandela highway is named after Malandela the
Zulu patriarch who was father
to King Zulu. The Kings who followed Zulu are thought to
be
Punga, Mageba, Ndaba,
Jama, Senzangakhona, Shaka, Dingane, Mpande, Cetshwayo,
Dinizulu, Solomon, Cyprian
and Goodwill Zwelethini. Malandela's father could have
been
a man named Nnja. North PierThe pier was built from 1850 onwards. It is
currently 335 metres long. The pier has
proved to be a fine barrier to the worst north easterly
sea -
swells and is popular
with fishermen. A good view of the harbour entrance and
beachfront is obtained from
here. South PierIt was built during the 1890's by engineer Edward
Innes . It provides a marvellous place
from which to fish for Barracuda or Shad. Umbilo WaterworksThe Umbilo waterworks were built in 1887 although the dam
was
washed away in May
1905. They are a national monument. Vasco Da Gama ClockThe clock was first installed in Point Road in 1897 to
commemorate Vasco da Gama's visit
to the Natal coast, four hundred years before in 1497.
The
stone plaque that stands
nearby was unveiled in 1969 by the ambassador of Portugal,
on
the 500th anniversary
of Da Gama's birth. Zulu Images, Old Receiver Of Revenue BuildingHigh above the door of the old Receiver of Revenue building
are a low - relief
sculptured Zulu head, assegai and fighting stick, all
sculpted by Mary Stainbank. | |||||
